ROS OS for Raspberry Pi - Ubuntu MATE vs. Raspbian

Is there a preferred OS for raspberry PI installs of ROS?

I typically use ubuntu, lately with Ubuntu MATE (16.04). Does ros perform better or worse between Ubuntu MATE (any version) and Raspbian (any version)? I would that Raspbian might be better due to a lower overhead but I don't know that for certain.

Any thoughts?

I would say Ubuntu arm (I have Ubuntu Mate on my pi3) is way better for a ROS project than Raspbian. I tried with Raspbian and It was really a pain to install ROS and a pain every time I wanted to install a new package (wrong dependencies and mostly It was very long because you need to compile every new package). You can read this wiki to have an impression of how a pain it is : link.

To compare you can check the install guide for ubuntu arm which look like the normal way to install ROS and especially installing new package is not a pain.

I would say that the only disadvantage of Ubuntu arm is that Ubuntu (Canonical) does not officially support raspberry pi. So for example for the raspberry PI3 I had to find a custom image. But in my case everything works, I am using GPIO, USB, Wifi...
