Hey guys ,

my masters program in robotics begins this fall , I have an apple silicon Mac( arm64 ), I was wondering if I can run ROS melodic natively on Mac OS or run it on ubuntu bionic beaver . Are there any features that are not supported on ubuntu arm64 vs amd64 ? I have docker on Mac OS but I am unable to find instructions to install ROS natively

One alternative is to use Robostack is currently experimental. Also you may consider installing a virtual machine

The place to go to find out about target platforms is the REP for the version of ROS you are trying to use.

The section for Melodic in REP 3 says that it is supported on Ubuntu Bionic on arm64.

Official MacOS support is unfortunately not available, although this doesn't mean that it's impossible to use. You will just have to compile it from source yourself, resolving dependencies manually using something like Homebrew or MacPorts. You may even be able to find a version of ROS 1 in one of those, or a guide on how to compile it. I don't think it will be easy, though. Using it in Ubuntu Bionic would be simpler.
