I'm thinking to build an autonomous drone as major project in my college. I want that drone to detect humans and send the gps location to the host pc or laptop. what would be the packages needed in ros to build such drone and can any one please provide some steps to build it in cost efficient manner. Thanks in advance!

Well I am not a amateur on the topic, but seeing that you are sill not recieving any response i will give you useful information i think i can give to you.

First of all, the coneccion can be done as duck-development says. I dont know if erlecopter is a good idea due to the fact that it is discontinued (it uses ros hydro, very old). I do not have experience on using ros in a raspberry so i cannot help, but for sure if you search, you will find (or anyone recommend you packages...).

You should also include a gps anthenna if you want to play with geolocalitzation (i foud a few ones for 3 buck on internet) and i think, if you want to give the exactl location of a person, with a 2d camera mybe there is not enough information (you can detect people but not exactly ...(more)

Here i let you a few packages interesting in the image-treathment (http://wiki.ros.org/image_pipeline) . This (the pointcloud) can help avoid obstacles also to do it autonomous.

You can connect the pi to ony quad copter controller with an serial interface.

To have the least offer use a pixhawk controller there are already many ros components.

Ore just buy a http://wiki.ros.org/Robots/Erle-copter

With ros inside
