Modifying the Nav Stack to allow for forward and backward movement without turning around?

I am working with a differential drive robot that I want to follow me when I walk along side it. I am using the nav stack to provide goals along with obstacle detection. The problems is when I walk backwards I place a nav goal behind the robot, the behavior I want is the robot to reverse following me, the current behavior is a path that turns the robot around. Thank you for the help.
