SLAM Vs registration

Hi,

I am working with 3D point clouds taken from the same object at different view, and I want to align them in a global 3D point cloud. The frames have been acquired in sequence and present extended overlapping areas. Thereofre, I should be able to apply SLAM to align them. Nevertheless, it is not completely clear to me the difference between SLAM and registration, especially since they both implement ICP.
