How can I use a custom version of urdfdom, instead of the upstream liburdfdom libraries?

I thought I had my answer here, https://github.com/ros/urdfdom/pull/123. However, these instructions do not work for me, as it is apparent that ROS is still running the urdfdom installed through debian.

Are you change the source in the catkin workspace where this custom version is?

source devel/setup.bash

I am not sourcing within the same catkin workspace where the custom version is, as they are not catkin packages.
