Bit of a detour, but OROCOS has TAO support through its Corba transport. OROCOS integrates with ROS quite ok.
Actually i have tried using orocos with ace tao. but i don't find that orocos community is not that active this days, i'm not sure to keep using that framework.
Then I wouldn't know how to use tao with ROS 1. Perhaps someone has implemented an alternative transport but you'd have to search for it.
