what's the difference of passing arguments via the command-line between dashing and crystal?

I am reading the instructions of passing ROS arguments via the command-line. It mentions that there are different ways to passing arguments between dashing and crystal. But I don't quite understand the difference that the guide is trying to show. Is there anyone can help me understand? Thanks.
