Foxy EOL / Ubuntu 20.04 Not EOL

asked 2023-08-07 18:41:18 -0500

The ROS2 documentation declares that Foxy Fitzroy EOL occurred on June 20, 2023.

The documentation on the ROS1 page found here: https://www.ros.org/reps/rep-2000.html Indicates that the ROS policy is to maintain the ROS version (for the purposes of my question Foxy) + corresponding Ubuntu version (Ubuntu 20.04) until the end of the standard support period for Ubuntu 20.04 which would be the end-of-May 2025.

I was unable to find a corresponding LTS statement on the ROS2 documentation. The ROS2 documentation clearly declares Foxy EOL as of June 30, 2023 as I said above.

I'm just trying to get clarification on what version of ROS2 I should use with 20.04?
Should I stick with Foxy or is it recommended to move up to a newer release?
If a newer release is recommended which one?

Thank you very much for your kind responses.

Minor (and just a comment), but:

The documentation on the ROS1 page found here: https://www.ros.org/reps/rep-2000.html [..]

REP-2000 is a ROS 2 REP: "ROS 2 Releases and Target Platforms".

per the note:

The following applies to ROS 2 releases after Foxy. Prior to Foxy, releases were made more frequently but with shorter support due to the fact that many foundational parts of ROS 2 were still being heavily developed.

So Humble is the first true LTS (Long Term Support) version
