concept behind assembling of laser scan lines by laser_assembler package?

I am using laser_assembler package for assembling laser scan line into a composite pointcloud. I successfully did that but I dont know the mathematical concept behind that. Just want to know on which basis laser assembler package is assembling laser scans?
