I typically forego optimus and use RVIZ on the integrated Intel 4000 on a Thinkpad 430s. Then again, I'm a bad person. :)
Every once in a while, if I really need to aggregate pointclouds, etc, I'll look up optimus/primus and how to run it. Either card works fine. Resolution is 1600x900.
