Thanks ahendrix. I'll take this advice till me. Also because I've dealt with this pain before, and should acknowledge not to go though it again.

2017-04-07 14:15:33 -0500 asked a question What hardware would be good to invest in for a hobbyist?

Hello everyone.

I have been getting a little into ros now and would like to try and make a robot with some added hardware to it.

I have different things laying around, like arduino's, raspberry pi, motors, h-bridges, joysticks, gps module, kinect sensor etc.

I see some project using the razor 9 dof sensor board and was going to order it. but now I would like to know what different things would be good to purchase more for making a robot base that has ros packages to support it.? Just like an outdoor rover platform. I will use some wheelchair motors and thinking about buying two of these encoders: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OMRON-Rotar...

I don't have a lot of money and would like to not use more than $500, at max $800 in a few months.. so no expensive laser scanners

It would also be preferred if there was a tutorial to follow along or a project that has been described.
at best I think the jetson hack site has some good information and wondering if I should acquire some of the same things.

What are some good hardware to acquire?

And another question: If I was to order the razor 9dof from sparkfun the sen14001 version: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/14001 would it be compatible with the ros package even though at the github page it says: 9 Degree of Measurement Attitude and Heading Reference System for Sparkfun 9DOF Razor IMU (SEN-10125 and SEN-10736) and SparkFun 9DOF Sensor Stick (SEN-10183, SEN-10321 and SEN-10724) https://github.com/Razor-AHRS/razor-9...

2016-12-13 08:07:46 -0500 answered a question 3D model sharing

So I tried to find all 1D,2D,3D sensors and collect them, I found some of them from: http://wiki.ros.org/Sensors

If someone is interested it is available for download from my google drive: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0ByOs...

I hope someone will share other files.

2016-12-13 06:53:23 -0500 asked a question 3D model sharing

Hello everyone

I was looking for 3D CAD files of sensors and hardware used with the ROS framework, but not many manufactures have 3D models for download.

So I started trying to search for each sensor: http://wiki.ros.org/Sensors But I'm interested in getting everything for designing robots - so motor controllers, motors, sensors, etc used with ROS and has ROS packages available for use.

And Some I find, some I don't when going through google, grabcad etc

So I wanted to know if people would like to share 3D models for robotics?

2016-10-07 14:35:50 -0500 commented question StudentProject about an Autonomous Bed Mover

Thanks :) I did check the amazon Kiva bot out, that's where I got the 2D bar code and camera tracking from.

2016-10-07 13:39:30 -0500 asked a question StudentProject about an Autonomous Bed Mover

Hello we’re a group of students from the University of Southern Denmark. Who has taken the task up to make an universal bed-mover, which will navigate in the hospital autonomous. During the idea and concept phase we’re encountering some issue that we visualize could be a problem for the robot to solve, due to our lack of experts knowledge in autonomous robotic systems, we most reach out for a helping hand.

Basically the bed-mover will have to transport the beds from one room to another and also in different floor levels, sometimes with patients in it, so patient care is important and also without patients.

Some of the issues we’re thinking could arise is:

We image the robot will have to recognise the specific bed it has to pick up either by one of the following systems/methods:

Placing a beacon/button on the beds so the robot would know where to go and which bed to move. Make a barcode for each bed so the robot would know which bed to take. Place a button on the room doors so you could summon the robot, and then have a beacon/button placed on the bed so it would know which one to take.

But if a nurse would happen to manually move the bed, then how will the bed mover be able to recognise it and find the new position for the bed?

Also we need to make sure it doesn’t just take off with a patient when it was meant to pick up an empty bed - so some weight measuring or thermal inspection might also be needed in the system.

This is just what we’ve been visualizing for now, but probably 50 other scenarios could happen.

So what other issues are there to be aware off when implementing an autonomous system around other people?

Thanks, if something is unclear just, say it and we’ll explain further.

Attached is a map of the component we believe the robotics platform should consist of also.image description

Best regards.

So I tried to setup my laptop for school work to dual boot windows and linux only to nearly fuck it up due to windows 8 complicating everything, so I've decided not to take the risk and instead by a cheap used laptop.

maximum price is $80 (Im from Denmark, so please do not send me offers) so ofcause the laptop will not be great, but what is the minimum requirements for running linux and ROS?

Would it be better for me to install Ubuntu 12.04.5 and ROS Hydro, if I want to make the Kinect follow me Robot, by using the open-ni-kinect packages? I didn't see the packages for the kinect in the Indigo version you linked.

2014-11-22 08:05:14 -0500 answered a question I can't install open ni on Indigo, what Linux version should I install instead

Thank you for your answer.

I've Ubuntu 14.04 installed with virtualbox and ROS Indigo.

when I try to run: sudo apt-get install ros-indigo-openni-kinect

And then I get this error: E: Unable to locate package ros-indigo-openni-kinect

I googled alot about ROS and Kinect, since Im new to it.

And came upon this:

" I had tried to get everything working on Win7 through VirtualBox, but I was never able to get the USB configuration for the Kinect to work"

http://dougsbots.blogspot.dk/2012/02/...

So I guess I've to install linux as Dual Boot.

But when I browse for ROS packages it seems that a lot of the package only works with the older ROS versions? http://stackoverflow.com/questions/25...

So would it be better to install hydro when I've to install Linux again as Dual boot.

Also is ROS Hydro compatible with the new version of Ubuntu 14.04?

Hello. I've tried to install ROS for the last two days, followed a few guides, tried to type in the installation commands in the ubuntu terminal a thousand times. I have virtualbox installed I have the extension packages installed I have installed ubuntu 12.04 I have checked: mail, universe, restricted and multiverse in the software sources and unchecked the installable cd/dvd. I have updated in terminal by executing the sudo apt-get update command everytime I enter this command: "the normal installation command" Nothing happens, just a new line with: ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ starts.

I cant post webadresses..

Another isues I also have is my keyboard has all the special signs like: _/(=&/¤*^" etc. swicted around, so I have to guess where they know are hidding even through I have my own country keyboard layout configurated, so what can that be all about? Im so frustrated right now, so hope somebody can help me, I have tried google alot without any concrete help. Best regards.
