I found my error it was simply some environment setting for Gazebo, so I sourced the suitable file as follows:
source /usr/share/gazebo-11/setup.bash
After that everything was working correctly. It might have been a Gazebo question rather than a ROS one but anyway I am keeping it here in case any one needs in the future.

this seems to be something with collision property of your bot, is there a ground_plane in the gazebo world ?
