Path_Planning or MPC_Follower for controlling a vehicle with a drive by wire system

Which would be recommended to use for controlling a vehicle which has a drive by wire system (older emc aevit system) ? I have heard that using path planning is easier and less chances for error but have not found much on it being used in a system like ours. The plan is to convert the output from either into 2 different voltages for the steering and gas/break to be inputted into the drive by wire system. Any ideas?
