Issues with reinstalling ROS Noetic; E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
I am using python3.9.1; Ubuntu 20.04; noetic.
I had a lot of issues with ROS so I decided to uninstall and reinstall it.
I did the following commands sudo apt-get purge ros-*
, sudo apt-get remove ros-*
. After this I followed the tutorial http://wiki.ros.org/noetic/Installati... up to stage 1.4. sudo apt update
worked successfully.
When I try to run sudo apt install ros-noetic-desktop-full
I get the following error
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
ros-noetic-desktop-full : Depends: ros-noetic-desktop but it is not going to be installed
Depends: ros-noetic-perception but it is not going to be installed
Depends: ros-noetic-simulators but it is not going to be installed
Depends: ros-noetic-urdf-sim-tutorial but it is not going to be installed
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
Some forums suggested to use sudo aptitude install ros-noetic-desktop-full
. After trying this command, I click Y to "accept solution". Nothing gets installed.
I don't know what is broken at this point. Considering re-installing Linux on my laptop. Any help would be appreciated.

Try:
sudo apt-get update --fix-missing
sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get update
The
install -f
command looks for any missing dependencies@osilva thank you for your response, I tried this. First line worked, second line gave the following output:
Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.
so it looked to me like it did nothing. Third line worked then I tried to install noetic usingsudo apt install ros-noetic-desktop-full
and it gave the same output as earlier. Do you have any other thoughts?Try this again:
sudo apt-get purge --auto-remove ros-noetic-desktop-full
sudo apt-get update
And try again to install. Hope it works
@osilva I tried but this also does nothing new. The output of the first command is
Reading state information... Done Package 'ros-noetic-desktop-full' is not installed, so not removed 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded.
What do you think?I think it sounds like it's time for a fresh install of Ubuntu. I run out of ideas honestly. This usually works for me. One last thing, you might want to check your
~/.bashrc
to see if there is anything that doesn't belong anymore.@osilva yes I think you're right. About whats on
~/.bashrc
do you know what I might be looking for? Also on the topic of re-installing Ubuntu do you know how I might do that without bothering my Windows partition? I have a duel boot.Be very careful with partitions. Backup everything in both systems if you are planning to redo. Can you show
~/.bashrc
?@osilva
I added
~/.bashrc
to the main part of this page because id did not fit into this comment. Note that at some point I had removed lines likesource /opt/ros/noetic/setup.bash
. This was suggested by somebody when I was trying to reset my catkin workspace.
