Recommended hardware for velodyne?

I'm new to ROS. I tried to interface a Velodyne LiDAR (VLP-16) with a Raspberry Pi 4. I had a hard time installing ROS on the Pi so I used the image file from Ubiquity Robotics with ROS Kinetic pre-installed. I was able to install the VLP16 driver following the tutorial (http://wiki.ros.org/velodyne/Tutorial...), but I wasn't able to successfully run the commands (such as $ roslaunch velodyne_pointcloud VLP16_points.launch). The Pi outputted inconsistent errors and sometimes would just got stuck. I have given up on the Pi and plan to buy a new laptop. Aside from interfacing with LiDAR I also want to try a few SLAM algorithms which all seem to be dependent on the velodyne ROS packages. Since I heard that ROS only works well with Intel processors, I'm wondering whether there are recommended hardware such as CPU, GPU and RAM so that for sure I won't waste money on a machine that is not compatible with the velodyne ROS drivers?
