What version ? What os for a WORKING RPI 3 installation (ROS-COMM)

considering the amount of time I just wasted trying to use a compiled ROS-COMM on RPI4, I wanted to know...
- is there any (really WORKING/final) ROS version usable on a raspberry pi 3 ?
- how do I install it on RPI3 ? can I use a headless ubuntu server distro from raspberrypi.org ?
- headless would be nice, since I have another computer for rviz
- the goal is to learn ROS and to use RPLIDAR and hector-slam or any other slam package
- do I aim for Kinetic ? I read that melodic was not ready yet, (some packages not yet available/stable/tested whatever)
I need something that works out of the box!
