how to find number of obstacles using a laser scan data

I am having a laser scan data for the whole 360 degree and from the ranges: [Array], I want to find the number of obstacles in proximity.

Take a look at this obstacle_detector package. It should be able to provide you obstacles all around you. Then you need to add ranges to it yourself.
