So I have a laptop that is currently running Windows 10. I want to have Linux and ROS on my laptop for my little side projects. But I want to keep my ability to use Windows 10 for my daily school life.

I thought if I got a USB and Installed Linux on that using this tutorial.

I have a bootable USB with Linux on it but when I try to install ROS following this tutorial

Neither:

sudo apt-get install ros-kinetic-desktop-full

or

sudo apt-get install ros-kinetic-desktop

Work, I did reserch and I guess installing ROS kinetic on a USB is harder than it seems but every tutorial is Un-clear and then I ran into this thing called ros2go and im not sure if I should be using that. I am a bit confused and need help.

"does not work" is not a sufficient description of what is going on for us to be able to help you.

Please show verbatim and complete copies of any error (or other) messages you see.

Please also include the output of lsb_release -a and uname -rvmp.

There is nothing inherently different between Xenial running from a USB stick or an internal drive. What could be going wrong is trying to install ROS Kinetic on Ubuntu Bionic. That would not be supported.

@Lion31, have you considered dual boot instead?

Heard about someone asked about ROS2GO. Our team developed it so just come here to answer this question.

Install Ubuntu and ROS on your internal hard drive, external hard drive or thumb drive are all the same, fundamentally speaking.

In your scenario, just install the ubuntu for your own use, Do-It-Yourself should be OK. ROS2GO is designed and maintained to be compatible with many up-to-date laptops and desktops. If you are a novice and have a very new type of wifi adapter definitely ROS2GO will save you much time.

There are some other problems with installation on a USB thumb drive. Actually, ROS2GO is a high-speed flash drive which is more like SSD, a common USB thumb drive may not be suitable for OS. Sometimes, the ROS server may be inaccessible due to many reasons, you should check whether you cannot install ROS on USB or you cannot install anywhere.

In an open-source society, you can always research or study or do something yourself, will spend more time but learn more knowledge or skill. ROS2GO provides a ready-to-go ROS system and portability for convenience.

It may bee a better solution to get ROS an a VM and copy this to the Stick. Becouse otherwise you may not fulfill all dependencies an special version for system libraries
