How does 3D Lidar work

Hello friends.... It is a beginner question for most of you, I had Google this question but I didn't reach any satisfied answer . What is the returned raw data from lidar,difference between 2d and 3d lidar ? How we map with lidar? , I need mathmatical relations of this process..
