question regarding 2d lidar market

Hi,

I'm new to the field of laser scanners, and as I browsed through the forum, I realized that people mainly use products from two brands, SICK and Hokuyo.

I can't help wondering why people only use products from these two brands. What's so special about them? Aren't there any other good 2d lidar brands out there? Considering that the science behind laser scanners/rangefinders is pretty straight forward, why aren't other companies jumping into this field? (or more importantly, why are people not using products from other companies?)

not the right place to ask this question

Hokuyo are popular because they are relatively cheap, small, reliable, and have easy to use software API's. I don't know of a company that can compete with them. The reason is probably that they would be difficult to compete with since their prices are pretty low and quality is pretty high.

I think this question would be more appropriate for a site like robotics.stackexchange.com. This site is intended for ROS-related questions and answers.
