Difficulty using ROS Melodic with Sawyer
I just installed ROS Melodic and seemingly none of the tutorials I tried have worked. I want to work with the RethinkRobotics Sawyer robot. And none of the example codes they have on their website work for me. They have written the tutorials for ROS Kinetic or Indigo, so I wanted to know if I would need any of these versions to be able to use these command prompts? No othe package whatsoever seems to be installing correctly... Thanks for the advice on beforehand!
Likely many things will work fine on Melodic, but you may run into some issues if, for example, you are using messages with definitions that have changed between Indigo and Melodic. Since you give no indication to what is not working, we can't really help you address specific issues.
For a beginner, probably the biggest challenge of using Melodic, as you allude to, is that many packages you want to use are not yet released. So you'll have to be fairly comfortable with building packages from source. If that doesn't describe you, I'd likely revert to Kinetic
If you are having a specific error trying to use Melodic, you could update your question to ask about that error. Saying that "nothing works" doesn't give us much to go off of.
Note that as of today, the robot is running Indigo, and many people use Kinetic when working with Sawyer with no issues. Using Melodic instead should introduce very few, if any, new issues. So likely the issues you are having are either packages not released or something unrelated to using Melodic
@Jorge G.: I hate to state the obvious, but you write yourself:
and then
complainseem surprised that things don't work OotB on Melodic, which is two releases newer?
