Recent comparison of robotic frameworks
We are developing our road map for R&D. One of the questions we have is whether or not we should invest in R&D in ROS. Therefore, I was searching for comparisons between robotics frameworks. The most recent article I found was: Robotics Middleware: A Comprehensive Literature Survey and Attribute-Based Bibliography from 2012. The article gives an overview. However, a lot of the frameworks mentioned in the article are not actively maintained anymore.
Is there a more recent (from 2015 or later) comparison between robotics frameworks? If not, are there competing frameworks that we should consider?

I appreciate you asking this question here, but seeing as this is *ROS* Answers, a site mostly catering towards beginners with ROS, I'm not expecting many answers.Actually, would be nice to see some answers. ROS is not a panacea, so perhaps board members have investigated others.

I personally don't know of anything even close to ROS in terms of size of the user-base and third-party hardware support. However, one that we came across was called Fawkes. We use CLIPS which is supported by Fawkes. But we have never actually tried Fawkes itself.
