Could you be a little bit more specific on how one would achieve that for all coordinate systems (since I'm quite new to ROS)?

This is actually not the answer, but at best a work-around. @rbbg posted the actual answer: no, this is currently not possible. Publishing markers yourself is nice, but they won't be axis aligned, nor are they part of the standard / provided infrastructure.
