How do i get started with ROS i am totally new to it?

I am first year undergraduate student and i am deeply involved in robotics so I started with ROS but i am not understanding a bit of it so wanted your help how do i start learning from where is it really good to learn from books or one of my friend told me that take one problem and start working towards it. This process is faster than reading from the books and the curve is also steep. So i am not understanding what problem to take please i need a guidance and any body who has got problem just ping me i am ready to team up with anybody having greater skills then me......

If you haven't done so already, the first place to start is definitely the beginner tutorials which can be found here.

Once you finish those, the books are a good way to learn but I agree with your friend, the best way to learn is to just get to work. If you get stuck this answers website is a good place to get unstuck.

I'm not sure what you're asking. Are you asking me to give you an assignment? I would suggest that you think about why you want to learn ROS, is there a problem you would like to solve using it? If so, try to solve that problem.

Aaron thats the problem. I am not able to think of problem but i started with Programming with Ros and i m liking it but all the other suggest that this way u will forget ros so if u have any problem i will try to solve it.....

You can do things in simulation (Gazebo) without hardware. I don't have an assignment for you, I suggest you use your imagination and come up with something yourself.
