I think hector_slam requires a lidar scanner; not a camera.

A quick google search for "hector slam asus" turns up this: and which strongly suggests that hector slam should work with an asus depth sensor.

hector_slam uses LIDAR data for SLAM. One can emulate LIDAR data with a RGB-D or stereo camera, but the results will be inferior to those with a proper LIDAR as the field of view is much smaller and noise much higher. See also this Q/A. Interestingly, the results presented here however look quite nice.
