Does RGB-D SLAM use Visual Odometry?

Hi guys , Does the RGB-D SLAM system employ any Visual Odometry (i.e for localization guesses) ? Is the RGB-D SLAM system a pure Visual SLAM approach? (I am a novice in the area)
