Which 3D mapping packages support saving the map to a file?

I'm looking for a mapping package that will use velodyne pointCloud2 messages and a localization producer to build a 3D map. After the map is created, I'd like to be able to save the map to file and load it for later review. Which mapping packages would you recommend for this?

  • A nice-to-have feature would also be coloring the 3D data with an image feed from a camera.

Hi, I am wondering if you had any luck and if you could share your findings/experience.

Ive used the rtabmap_ros package and it works really well. It has its own map format which is saved (huge files obviously). Hope you have a fast computer.. (:

Could you please elaborate. Did you use rtabmap_ros with velodyne's pointCloud2 messages? Did you use any other sensors? What was your setup? Thank you.
