How to use COG for wind direction measuring for pilot ballon project

Dear all

I 'm going to create a pilot ballon to measure vertical atmosphere parameter, and i use GPS as a sensor to measure wind direction and also wind speed. If i used " COG", to measure wind direction for this case, does it correct or not ? and please give me a suggestion or tutorial, i need a help for this

I´m pretty sure this question is off topic, you should probably ask this question in a aeronautics related forum or so.
