Gmapping Tutorial Issue

I am new to ROS and I am trying to get the slam_gmapping tutorial working with the example data file (basic_localization_stage.bag)

I got till step 6.

The terminal that contains 'rosrun gmapping slam_gmapping scan:=base_scan _odom_frame:=odom_combined'
says "Registering First Scan. Killed"

and the terminal with 'rosbag play --clock...' is running forever. (The total duration is 1239670987) Is there anything I'm doing wrong?
