(Kobuki) Serial Extension Port - Digital Output

Has anyone used the serial port on the Kobuki base to generate digital outputs? I need a timer pulse to synchronize two on-board cameras for stereo-vision. Currently I have an arduino (overkill) on a customized Create base, and am in the process of bringing online a friend for this first turtlebot.

I think I found the answer on my own:http://docs.ros.org/api/kobuki_msgs/html/msg/DigitalOutput.html Has anyone used this and can verify that I should have no issues using this?
