Unable to communicate with master!

I am working on Configuring and Using a Linux-Supported Joystick with ROS. Everything goes good until start the joy node rosparam set joy_node/dev "/dev/input/jsX". That is when I get Unable to communicate with master. Any help would be appreciated.

Please run through http://ros.org/wiki/ROS/Troubleshooting first and if you still have issues, please include much more information, especially your ROS environment variables and network configuration.

I should have mentioned that I am using electric on Ubuntu 11.4
