This was a similar question about upgrading from Diamondback to Electric, and pretty everything from that answer is the same for upgrading from Electric to Fuerte. Basically, you can leave Electric installed, but you need to rebuild all of your source packages.
You could also look into overlays to see if that would help you more in your current situation.
