What do you see when you type lsusb into the terminal? You should see 3 Microsoft Corp devices in the list (no motor if kinect 2):

Microsoft Corp. Xbox NUI Camera

Microsoft Corp. Xbox NUI Motor

Microsoft Corp. Xbox NUI Audio

If is there then try this: $ roslaunch freenect_launch freenect.launch depth_registration:=true
