It's impossible to give you a definitive answer to how long it will take you to get into ROS - depends how much you already know about coding, robotics, maths etc..., and what you are trying to do.

Most nodes are written in C++ or Python.

Go to http://wiki.ros.org/ and go through Install, Overview and Tutorials. If you work full time on those you should be able to get them done in a couple of days. That will give you an idea of the infrastructure of ROS and what writing code might involve.
