Might sound barbaric but you ever thought about drilling a hole in the plate above the crate power button? But if you were teleoperating turtlebot and not able to see the robot. You probably would have to use a micro controller like arduino to toggle the power botton on the create with a relay then you could also tap into the powerbutton-led voltage to confirm that the crate was on or off.
