3D Aerial Mapping with Velodyne LiDAR

I am trying to perform 3-D aerial mapping by mounting a VLP16 on a six-rotor drone. Up to now, I was only able to run some minimal tests with LOAM, but the distortion in the generated map is very high. Is there any other approach that would work better with the setup I have?

how is your progress? i am trying to do the same task using VLP16, can't even compile LOAM on ros indigo. which LOAM package are you using?
