parallel port breakout?

I'm new to all this I've got a couple old asea irb6 arms I put steppeers on them thinking I could run off mach3 I'm learning the hard way any help would be appreciated. Just put in ubunto on a machine working on ros now. can I get it to run beakout boards off a printer port?

That's quite a specific question. General comment: ROS is typically used for more 'high-level' things/control. To get the basic joint/Cartesian space and motor control going you could perhaps look at Machinekit. That has some experimental ROS i'face.
