rviz crashed when changing fixed frame to laser

Hello, hardcore newbie here and Ive this issue need helping. My rviz crashed everytime I changed my fixed frame under Global Options when I try to visualized my laser scan. In Laser scan display, I add /scan for the topic menu. I am using Hokuyo UTM 30LX and ran hokuyo_node prior to running rviz. Error message I get:

My rviz version is 1.9.34 compiled against OGRE version 1.7.4 (Cthugha) and OpenGl version: 3 (GLSL 1.3). Im using Groovy in ubuntu 12.04 and my graphic card is Nvidia quadro fx580.

Suggestion from here said to install rviz 1.9.35 or 1.9.32 which I have no idea on doing for my ros groovy (should I uninstall my current rviz and install version 1.9.35/2?) and build it from source (how can I do that?). Feedbacks are appreciated.
