Disable advanced graphics features in gazebo

We are trying to run gazebo (the new one) on virtual machines with VirtualBox and VMWare. Since graphics features are limited on the virtual machines, gazebo crashes instantly when starting the gazebo client. The entire virtual machine seems to crash.

However, we were able to run the old gazebo (https://playerstage.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/playerstage/code/gazebo/trunk/) in the latest revision. So, there seem to be some new graphics features.

Is there a way to disable the more advanced graphics features during build?

can you pin point the graphics feature causing the crash or please provide more information on the crash (e.g. console outputs and backtrace)? Thanks.

@chrivo Gazebo may not work well with Virtual OS, the hardware (in this case the graphics card) interfacing into a Virtual OS is never 100% effective.
